What Midjourney is
Midjourney is an image generator with an opinionated aesthetic. It does not aim to be neutral or photographically literal; it aims for images that look composed. That bias is why its output is used for concept art, pitch decks and campaign visuals more than for product mockups.
Where Midjourney is genuinely strong
Default quality
The first generation is usually good. With most tools you iterate toward something usable; with Midjourney you iterate toward something specific. Across a batch of identical prompts, Midjourney produced usable images on the first attempt noticeably more often than competitors.
Style consistency
When you need twelve images that look like they belong together — a campaign, a deck, a set of chapter headers — Midjourney holds a style better than tools optimised for single striking images.
Relax mode
From the Standard plan upward, generation outside fast GPU hours is unlimited. If you are not on a deadline, the effective ceiling on how much you can make is very high.
Where it hurts
No free tier
You cannot try before you buy. That is unusual in this category and it makes the decision harder than it needs to be, particularly for occasional users.
GPU-hour budgeting
Fast hours are consumed at a rate that depends on resolution and settings, so predicting monthly cost is guesswork until you have used it for a month.
Legal uncertainty
Copyright litigation involving major studios remains unresolved. For most commercial use this is a background risk rather than a blocker, but for work with high legal exposure it is a factor worth raising with counsel.
What it costs
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $8/mo | Billed annually; $10/mo month-to-month. Limited fast GPU hours |
| StandardPick | $24/mo | Billed annually; $30/mo monthly. Unlimited Relax mode |
| Pro | $48/mo | Billed annually; $60/mo monthly. More fast hours, stealth mode |
| Mega | $96/mo | Billed annually; $120/mo monthly. Highest fast-hour allowance |
Prices checked against Midjourney plan documentation on 2026-10-25. Fast GPU hour allowances differ by plan and are the practical constraint on paid work.
Who should skip Midjourney
Skip it if you need text rendered inside images — Ideogram is decisively better. Skip it if you need editable vector output or brand-consistent assets, where Recraft fits better. Skip it if you need a free tier to justify the purchase internally. And skip it if your legal team is uncomfortable with the outstanding litigation.
How we tested
We ran identical prompt sets across Midjourney, Ideogram and Recraft, scoring first-generation usability, style consistency across a twelve-image set, and legibility of in-image text. We measured fast-hour consumption at two resolution settings. Pricing was re-checked on the date shown above.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Best default aesthetic quality in the category
- Unlimited Relax generation from the Standard plan upward
- Commercial rights on any paid plan
- Consistent style across a set of images
What to watch out for
- No free tier and no trial
- Fast GPU hours are confusing to budget
- Unresolved copyright litigation involving major studios
- Workflow is Discord/web-first, which not everyone wants
Our verdict
Midjourney still produces the best-looking images, and it is the only major image tool with no free tier — which tells you exactly how confident it is. The aesthetic lead has narrowed as competitors improved, and the company carries real legal uncertainty, but if the image is the deliverable rather than a step in one, this is where we start.
Best for: Concept art, moodboards and campaign key visuals where the look is the point.
