What Ideogram is for
Ideogram is an image generator built around one capability that the rest of the category handles badly: rendering text. Not a logo slotted in afterwards — text as part of the generated image, spelled correctly and set convincingly.
If you have ever tried to make a poster or a YouTube thumbnail with a general-purpose image model, you have met the problem. Ideogram is the answer to it.
Where Ideogram is genuinely strong
Typography that survives
Short headlines, product names and labels render legibly and with plausible type design. It is not perfect — long paragraphs still break down — but for a headline on a poster it works, and nothing else in this price range does it reliably.
Generous free access
Weekly credits plus unlimited slow generations mean you can evaluate properly before paying, and continue experimenting afterwards. This is the most usable free tier among the serious image tools.
Private generation
Paid plans can generate privately, which matters when you are working on unreleased products or client material you do not want surfaced in a public gallery.
Where it hurts
Credits expire
Priority credits do not roll over. If your workload is bursty, you will pay for months where you use half the allowance and lose the rest.
Weaker art direction
Ask for an evocative, atmospheric image and Ideogram produces something competent rather than striking. The gap is visible next to Midjourney output on identical prompts.
Editing costs credits
The AI editing features draw from the same priority credit pool as generation, so a session of tweak and re-tweak drains the allowance faster than generating from scratch would.
What it costs

| Team | $20/mo | Per user, billed annually; collaboration features |

Who should skip Ideogram
If your images never contain text, Midjourney gives you better-looking results for similar money. If you need brand-consistent, editable output, Recraft is the better fit. And if your usage is very low and irregular, the credit expiry makes the paid plans poor value.
How we tested
We generated 40 images containing text — headlines, labels, product names — and scored legibility, spelling accuracy and type quality, comparing against the same prompts in Midjourney and Recraft. We also ran a set of text-free prompts to measure the aesthetic gap. Pricing was re-checked on the date shown above.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Best-in-class text rendering inside images
- Unlimited slow generations
- Private generation on paid plans
- Free tier is usable, not a demo
What to watch out for
- Priority credits expire monthly with no rollover
- AI editing features consume priority credits
- Fewer style controls than Midjourney
- Weaker at pure art direction and mood
Our verdict
Ideogram solves the one problem that made AI images useless for a lot of real design work: words come out spelled correctly. That is a narrow advantage, and it is enough to justify a subscription if you make posters, thumbnails, packaging or anything with a headline. For pure aesthetics, Midjourney is still ahead.
Best for: Posters, logos, packaging mockups and any design that needs words in the picture.
