What Claude is good at
Claude's advantage shows up when the input is long and the task requires judgement rather than retrieval. Give it a 60-page report and ask for the three decisions that matter, or give it a draft and ask what is wrong with the argument, and the difference against competitors is visible.
It is also less inclined to agree with you. Asked to critique a plan, it will say the plan is weak. That is worth more than a feature list.
Where Claude is genuinely strong
Long-context reasoning
Analysis across large documents holds together: it does not lose the beginning of a report by the time it reaches the end, and it cross-references sections accurately.
Artifacts
It produces documents, spreadsheets and simple applications as real files you can open and edit, rather than code blocks you have to copy somewhere.
Writing quality and tone
For editing, summarising and drafting, the output needs less rewriting than most alternatives. It is also more willing to tell you that your draft does not work.
Claude Code included
The subscription includes a capable terminal coding agent. For anyone who both writes and ships code, that consolidation is the deciding factor.
Where it hurts
Weekly limits
Paid plans carry weekly caps. If you use Claude as a daily work tool you will hit them, and the published information about what the caps actually are is thin.
Max pricing
The step from Pro to Max is large and Max is monthly-only, so there is no annual discount at the top end. It is priced for genuinely heavy users.
Verbosity
Left unconstrained, Claude writes long. Ask explicitly for brevity when you want it.
What it costs
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Daily usage allowance, enough for regular light use |
| ProPick | $17/mo | Billed annually; $20/mo month-to-month. Includes Claude Code |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | Monthly only; five times the Pro usage allowance |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | Monthly only; twenty times the Pro usage allowance |
| Team | $20/mo | Per seat, billed annually; admin and workspace features |
Prices checked against the Claude pricing page on 2026-10-25. Max tiers are monthly-only with no annual discount.
Who should skip Claude
If you want one assistant that also does images, voice and custom bots, ChatGPT covers more. If your work is factual research where citations matter more than prose, Perplexity is built for that. And if you use an assistant a few times a week, the free tier is genuinely capable — do not pay yet.
How we tested
We ran identical long-document tasks across Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini: summarising a 70-page report, critiquing a strategy draft, and extracting decisions from a meeting transcript set. We scored accuracy, how much rewriting the output needed, and whether the assistant pushed back on a deliberately weak argument. Pricing was re-checked on the date shown above.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Strongest long-document reasoning in this category
- Artifacts produce usable files, not just chat text
- Consistent, less sycophantic tone for editing and critique
- Claude Code is included in the same subscription
What to watch out for
- Weekly usage limits apply even on paid plans
- Max tiers are monthly-only and expensive
- No image generation focus
- Prose can be verbose if you do not constrain it
Our verdict
Claude is the assistant we reach for when the work is long, careful and written. Its advantage is not breadth of features but quality of reasoning over large inputs, and a tone that pushes back rather than agreeing. The weekly limits are the main frustration, and the Max tiers are priced for people who use it all day rather than all week.
Best for: Writers, analysts and anyone working with long documents that need real reasoning.
