What Claude Code is
Claude Code is a coding agent that runs in your terminal. There is no IDE, no side panel, no new interface to learn — you describe the work and it reads the repository, plans, edits and runs commands.
The commercial detail matters as much as the technical one: if you already pay for Claude Pro or Max, it is included. For a lot of engineers that makes it free.
Where Claude Code is genuinely strong
Repo-scale reasoning
On an unfamiliar codebase it can map structure, identify where a behaviour lives and explain the connections before touching anything. This is the most useful capability when you inherit a project or dip into one occasionally.
Terminal-native
It fits the workflow you already have: your editor, your shell, your git. There is no context switch to a separate application, and it composes with scripts and CI.
Long tasks without losing the thread
Multi-step work — find all call sites, update, run tests, fix failures — holds together better here than in tools that treat each request independently.
Where it hurts
Entry price
There is no cheap coding-only tier. The cheapest way in is a full Claude Pro subscription, which is more than GitHub Copilot and comparable to Cursor Pro.
Weekly limits
Even paid plans have weekly usage limits. On heavy days you will hit them, and the only way up is Max, which is significantly more expensive and monthly-only.
No graphical editor
If you want inline diffs, a file tree and visual review, this is not that tool. It is a terminal program, and it expects you to be comfortable there.
What it costs
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited Claude usage, enough to try Claude Code |
| ProPick | $17/mo | Billed annually; $20/mo month-to-month. Claude Code included |
| Max 5x | $100/mo | Monthly only; substantially higher usage limits |
| Max 20x | $200/mo | Monthly only; highest limits |
| Team | $20/mo | Per seat, billed annually; admin controls |

Who should skip Claude Code
If you do not already pay for Claude, the entry price is a full subscription when cheaper coding-specific plans exist. If you want a graphical IDE with visual diff review, Cursor is the better fit. And if you only need autocomplete, GitHub Copilot at $10/month does that job for less.
How we tested
We ran Claude Code against a mid-size unfamiliar repository, asking it to locate a behaviour, explain the relevant modules and then implement a change with tests. We compared the same tasks in Cursor, tracked how often each needed manual correction, and measured how quickly weekly limits were reached under heavy use. Pricing was re-checked on the date shown above.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Excellent repo-scale reasoning on unfamiliar codebases
- Terminal and CLI native, fits existing workflows
- No extra cost if you already pay for Claude Pro or Max
- Handles long, multi-step tasks without losing context
What to watch out for
- No cheap standalone tier below a full Claude subscription
- Weekly usage limits bind on heavy days
- Max tiers are monthly-only and expensive
- No graphical editor — you are in the terminal
Our verdict
Claude Code is the best value in AI coding, with one condition: you already pay for Claude. If you do, it costs nothing extra and its repo-scale reasoning is genuinely strong. If you do not, the entry price is a full Claude subscription rather than a cheap coding plan, and Cursor or Copilot will look better on paper.
Best for: Engineers who already pay for Claude and want an agent without a second subscription.
